Operational Safety

The Jordan Atomic Energy Commission is committed to achieving the highest standards of safety and quality by conducting safety assessments for the design of nuclear reactors intended to be built in the Kingdom. The commission ensures that the reactor design provides multiple levels of safety that can be relied upon to prevent the release of radioactive materials, aiming to avoid accidents. It also ensures that the selected sites and technologies for building nuclear reactors are

suitable in terms of the safety of workers inside the facility and the residents around the nuclear area. Moreover, the commission studies the environmental impact in the event of an accident at the facility and guarantees that effective measures are taken to protect the public and the environment under such circumstances.

It ensures that the design of the nuclear power reactor offers multiple levels of safety (defense in depth) to prevent the release of radioactive materials and to mitigate their radiological consequences should an accident occur.

Additionally, the commission works to establish a strong nuclear safety culture by conducting a series of lectures and training courses for its employees.

Safety Culture

Safety is one of the top priorities of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission and a core value of its culture. The commission is constantly committed to safety culture at all levels to ensure the safety of the Jordanian community, workers, and the environment. Every employee is responsible for safety and has the right to take action to maintain it. The commission works alongside regulatory

bodies and the international nuclear community to develop and maintain a global nuclear safety culture by establishing and maintaining leading safety procedures and policies. Regular quality and safety audits are an integral part of the program to ensure continuous improvement in all administrative and operational aspects.

Safety culture relies on employees at all levels. In addition to the regular training programs set by the commission to ensure safety, employees have the right to express their safety-related concerns and identify areas for improvement. The commission also conducts assessments to maintain accuracy, promote continuous improvement, and foster a work environment that recognizes the importance of safety.

Regulatory Authority

The responsibility for enforcing the legislation and regulations applicable to facilities using radioactive materials falls on the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission. In addition to other obligations related to the licensee, the regulatory authority has the power to take necessary enforcement actions to ensure compliance by the license holder in accordance with the Radiation Protection, Nuclear Safety, and Security Law No. 43, which aims to regulate and

monitor the uses of nuclear energy and ionizing radiation. To achieve this, the commission is committed to conducting regulatory inspections, issuing the necessary personal and institutional permits and licenses for the operation of nuclear facilities, and monitoring the licensee's compliance with applicable legislation. Furthermore, it engages with international nuclear regulatory bodies to exchange expertise and scientific research.
