Central Storage Facility (CSF)
The Central Storage Facility (CSF) was established at Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) in 2010 to manage and store all types of Radioactive Waste (RW) mainly Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRS) generated in Jordan from the peaceful applications of radioactive materials in various fields of daily life, including medical applications, remote diagnostics, industrial field such as gamma imaging and agricultural applications equipment such as humidity and density measurements, as well as applications in scientific, training and educational research centers and Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) activities, such as mining and drilling operations.
All types of RW are managed according to predisposal management procedures, including transportation, characterization, classification, identification, conditioning, packaging, treatment, and storage in the CSF. These procedures adhere to the standards and requirements issued by the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) and international best practices. This approach aligns with the principles of public safety and well-being by preventing accidental exposure to ionizing radiation and safeguarding against unauthorized or illicit use of radioactive materials. Furthermore, it aims to protect ecosystems and prevent contamination of air, water, and soil by radioactive substances, while also aligning with global efforts to uphold safety standards and prevent the proliferation of nuclear materials. Facility staff are abreast of the latest scientific studies related to RW management, and the new technologies available.
